I hereby make the should-be-but-apparently-isn’t-obvious point that any reasonable construal of Barack Obama’s communicative intent in the following:
“I had no contact with the governor or his office and so I was not aware of what was happening,” Obama told reporters today in Chicago. “It’s a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment.”
…would not lead one to conclude the content of the headline which appears above that quote on Bloomberg:
Obama Says He Had No Contact With Blagojevich on Senate Seat
Drudge is, of course, blaring the headline. Jake Tapper has cynically dug up some quote contradicting something Obama never said. Hot Air laps it up. Others among us find further disheartening evidence that some people live in a different world than you and I, and the door is fastened very, very tightly.
Edit: I originally wrote and posted this. Then I realized I was (a) being petulant and (b) giving Obama too much credit. He’s either dissembling or being deliberately obfuscatory. As Dickerson says, the quote is “vague as to be nearly meaningless.” This isn’t an excuse for imputing specificity that wasn’t there. But this type of behavior—especially the “ongoing investigation” dodge—is disgusting and does not merit my defense. So I took the post down. As Ambinder says, “it is striking to hear [Obama] refuse to make any comments due to an ongoing investigation.” It’s Scott McClellan during Plame. And it’s, frankly, outrageous.
